A friend of mine, who is a Civil engineer herself, is so much in love with her field of work, that she organized a construction theme party for her son’s first birthday. They did a lot of hard work and put in extraordinary efforts to organize a totally awesome party. And of course, we were totally digging it! (pun intended).
I have compiled almost everything you need to know about a construction or a transportation them party, so this is going to be a somewhat long post! Not into reading? No problem. See this pinterest compilation of more than a 100 ideas to get your party started!

Loads of Information ahead
Look at this picture. How decent and totally awesome it looks. We are going to talk about everything in this picture. Starting from the backdrop, and right up to every tiny detail; the food on the table, cake, table cloth, the super awesome signal on the right, party favors, and just about everything!
So, lets get started!
BACKDROP
Everything in this Construction theme party backdrop is handmade. My friend drew and cut the cars herself, and printed out some cars and road signs from a local shop. You can, however recreate a similar look by buying the following stuff online or you can sign up at the bottom of the post to get all these Printables. and get print outs yourself.
If you are buying online then,
Start with a plain black table cloth as base, and everything else you need to make this backdrop, can be found by clicking on the linked image right below,
Use the caution tape as borders, put the happy birthday banner in the center, and decorate the rest with cars, trucks and road signs any way you please.
If however, you are up for some extra work, then you can also print out the exact same Happy Birthday Road Sign Printable. After printing this out, you can cut and use them on your backdrop.

Or maybe, you want to find a great background and just cut short the extra work? Then, you may want to see the ready made brick wall and construction cars backdrop that I found on Amazon.
This looks pretty cool by itself. And if you pair it up with some Special construction theme printed balloons, you will have a complete background up and about in no time at all.
BALLOON TRAFFIC SIGNAL
To make This Traffic Signal from balloons you will need:
- Balloon Stand
- Black Balloons
- Red, Yellow and Green Balloon (1 each)
- Sticky tape
- Plastic Hard hat to cover the top (optional)
Cover the rest of the stand with black balloons (as many as you can fit on the stand).
ORANGE TRAFFIC CONES
In my opinion, adding orange traffic cones was the perfect little last touch. Any Construction theme birthday party would be incomplete without these orange traffic cones.
And what’s more, you can always use these traffic cones as balloon weights for that extra bit of creativity.
CAKE TABLE
Construction theme party Table Cloth:
Don’t you think this Table cover used here on the cake table says it all? great metallic design, and incorporates all the colors of our construction theme?

Cars & Road Sign Printables:
The construction cars and road sign printables are used pretty creatively by sticking them to the front of the table in a manner that half of the images are on the table cover and half in the air. To do this, you either need to print your images on a card paper, or if you are using regular paper, then get them laminated.
You can also save some time by buying construction theme decor and stickers online.

Signal Candy Tray:
Use red, yellow and green plastic plates and glass.
Stack them on top of each other to make them look like a signal.
Fill them with candies of respective colors (i.e: red candies in red plate and so on)
This looks cool in a construction theme party and will look great in any transportation or truck theme birthday party or baby shower.
Construction theme Birthday party Cake:
Cake on the table is by Hira’s Sweet Affair. It both looked and tasted Awesome!!
Cars are all real metallic ones, and even the extra space left on the cake plate is utilized quite creatively as a road with construction vehicles moving around.
Creative Extras On the Cake table:
Since it is a construction theme party, adding “Dig in” road signs to party finger food like pastries, or cheese balls will add a cool touch. While, the food on the table can be labeled creatively as follows:
- Wafers= Timber
- Chololate balls= Boulders (Displayed in a wheel loader)
- m&m or any small bunties= Pebbles (bonus, if you can put them in a pail)
- Small stone chocolates= Gravel (also displayed in a pail)
- Chocolate pudding with cushed oreo toppings= Dirt cup
CLOTHES
Well, every party, or at least every theme party needs clothes, and I have found the perfect ones for the whole team. Clothes for the Birthday boy…
This shirt is a general one for all age groups, but there are pretty specific and creative designs out there for
age 1,
age 2,
age 3
and age 4.

BIRTHDAY PARTY FAVORS
How would our Construction Birthday be complete without some Construction theme party favors??
My friend selected two different gifts for different age groups:
For ages 0 to 3, they gave small construction cars (my daughter got a cement truck), but there were excavators, cranes and garbage trucks as well. (so cool)
For ages 3 and above, they gave blank canvases, paints and instructions on how to paint a construction vehicle (very thoughtful, I must say!)
CONSTRUCTION VEHICLE PHOTO PROP
This is a pretty cool coal truck design photo prop. It is hand drawn on yellow card sheet. The orange stripes on the body of the vehicle are orange card sheets. After cutting, the prop was pasted on a cardboard for stability.
The super model for this photo is of course my daughter, who has apparently taken after me in this regard and loves getting her photos taken (Thank God for that!)
