As the world book day looms near, Book weeks are a common occurrence. And with “Book weeks” comes the need to dress up as book characters, which is AWESOME, but can nevertheless be expensive. This is why, we are bringing to you these 21 fun and creative DIY Book week costumes, that are easy to make and budget friendly. This is because we want the kids to have maximum fun without the need to Break the bank!!
Even if you don’t need the costume dress up ideas, this post is still worth reading as it will give you an idea about the next great book to buy for your little one!

1. Chika Chika Boom Boom:

Who wouldn’t want to dress up in all black with colorful felt alphabets all over their body!! And Chika chika Boom boom is an awesome book that makes learning Alphabet so interesting!
2. The Giving Tree:
This is the story of a tree that gives all it has unconditionally, to a young boy….
You can use this Tree costume for many other children’s books as well such as:
1. Seeds and Trees
2. Tell me Tree: All about trees for young kids
3. The Hugging Tree
Infact, this costume is fit for any book about a tree. It also looks fairly simple to make.
3. The Grouchy lady Bug:
The journey of the Grouchy Lady Bug takes the children through the concepts of time, size, shape and much more….
The costume can be made by cutting two semi circles and some small black circles from a card sheet and attaching them on the back of a full black dress! And You can make these antenna’s with pipe cleaners!!
4. Charlie and the chocolate factory (Veruca Salt & Mr. Willy Wonka):
Ohh, the expressions of this young girl, took me back in my own childhood. Through the chocolate lakes and up the glass lift!
Charlie and the Chocolate factory offers a lot of dress up options like the scornful and pampered Veruca Salt, or the mysterious Mr. Willy Wonka!!
5. Mickey Mouse the Greatest Adventures:
Yes, Mickey Mouse is not only a cartoon. The early Mickey mouse used to be a Comic Book character.
I think Mickey or Mini Mouse are fairly simple and easy to dress up as! Just take the right colors: Red, Black, White and Yellow. You can’t go wrong with a Mickey Mouse!!
P.S. Check out the Yellow crocs on the little girl’s feet!! So adorable!!
6. 1 Fish 2 Fish By Dr. Seuss:
This Costume is good for Book week or even Dr. Seuss day!! So simple, yet so adorable.
7. The BFG:
or the Big Friendly Giant is a Roald Dahl Classic….
8. Matilda:
This is another classic story by Roald Dahl, about a little girl who doesn’t know that she has magic… Any elegant blue dress with a sweater would work as costume!
9. Little miss Sunshine:
Little Miss Sunshine visits Misery Land and turns it into Laughter Land.
And to make this costume, you need a big yellow card sheet circle, some yellow yarn for the hair, and red ribbons to tie up the hair!
10. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & through the Looking Glass (Queen Of Hearts):
All the characters in Alice in Wonderland are so creative and awesome! From the small rabbit who takes out his stopwatch, to the Mighty Queen of Hearts!

11. Curious George (Man in the Yellow Hat):
Curious George is a must have!! It is the story of this curious monkey who likes to explore….
I would like to recommend this excellent Touch and Feel Board book for toddlers which goes by Curious George at the Zoo.
12. Diary of a Wimpy Kid:
There is something about this dress that is just so creative!! All you need is to draw Jeffrey’s sketchy face and hands and dress up in black and white!!
13. Jack and the Bean stalk:
A young boy who believes in magical beans and gets to visit the giant!!
I especially love the Pool Noodle Bean stalk!!
And the small bag of magical beans in his belt!
14. The rainbow fish:
This is a book about a beautiful and vain fish, whom no one wants to befriend, until she learns the art of sharing….
With some color changes, this costume can also be turned into The Little Mermaid’s costume.
15. Elmer the Elephant:
A beautiful story about a multicolored patchwork elephant who will teach your children to be themselves!!
The DIY book week costume for Elmer looks so great!! If you are not into sewing, simply color the white shirt and pants and you have got yourself a unique and creative costume!!
16. Sesame Street (Elmo):
Elmo, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Grover! There are so many dress up options!!
For Elmo, an all red dress with a face mask looks perfect!
If you don’t want a face mask, I found a cool hat from Party Warehouse that would look perfect:
17. The very Fairy Princess:
A story about a Fairy Princess with scraped knees and a ruined dress! YUP that’s my daughter!! And she always comes home with a scraped knee!!
All you need is a card sheet to fashion into some wings, a tiara and a wand!!
And a pink and white dress of course!!
18. The very Hungry Caterpillar:
This is an All time kid’s favorite picture book which is read somewhere in the world every 30 seconds!!
And to dress up as a caterpillar, all you need is some green paper circles and a red paper plate!!
19. The Lorax:
Dr. Seuss once again!
An all orange dress, orange glasses and a bushy mustache made with yellow paper!!
20. Moon Landing:
Moon landing is a book by Hello World series, which explains Non-fiction concepts to toddlers.
This costume would go with any Space book though!!
I love how everything in this costume is recycled: Plastic bottles, bottle cap buttons and keyboard keys!
21. Harry Potter:
I just had to add Harry Potter! i just had to! Because it is THE BOOK for me! it is the Book that started the crazy never ending book frenzy!
And my friend’s son makes a really cute Harry potter!
You will need:
1. A Harry potter Robe
2. Harry’s wand
3. Round glasses
and any white collar shirt
